The importance of the designer notebook

Updated: Feb 28, 2018

If you have been around the block a few times you know that you will be called on the justify a design or design change eventually (it could be 2 years down the road).

I have learned from some of the top designers in the world that keeping a record of your daily activity is invaluable. It can be as simple as a few notes that are dated every day and as elaborate as a shareable spreadsheet with permissions and kept in a program like Vault.

Memories are selective and especially in a large company there will be someone at some time that thinks that your design is wrong or that you did not deign it in the direction that was talked about in a meeting 2 years ago.

Another good example is that I was asked to pull up a conceptual design of a product that I had started a couple of years earlier because the company had some money and wanted to get another product on the market. While going back through my Designer notebook I found a conceptual design that I had long forgotten about. When I first invented this product, 10 years earlier, the market was not ready for it but now it was.

This product cost a quarter to launch and would have been forgotten about without.
